Diablo 4 Season 16 PTR gold sessions favor Scent of Gold's monster-gold-and-gems branch over its materials branch, while War Plans can add three Gold reward points to the same route. Grinding remains the default, while some players use D4 Gold to cover an early purchase; the better in-game choice is still the setup that produces measurable wallet growth during the full session.
Scent of Gold or Materials: Choose by the Resource You Need
Scent of Gold has two practical directions. The gold-focused side improves monster gold and gem drops, making it the direct pick for spendable currency. The other side favors Horadric Cube materials and Gem Fragments, so it fits a crafting project rather than a vendor purchase or other immediate gold expense.
The materials branch is not a weaker version of the gold branch. It serves a different target. Keep it for a session where Cube materials are the limiting resource, then switch back only when the expected value can cover the 5,000,000 gold refund cost for every Boons point removed.
Setup Best use Main return Main drawback
Scent of Gold, monster gold and gems Funding purchases and fees Monster gold and gem drops Refund cost when changing branches
Scent of Gold, materials and Gem Fragments Cube and crafting projects Horadric Cube materials and Gem Fragments Less direct wallet growth
War Plans, three Gold reward points Plan completion income Higher chance of Gold rewards Requires completed plans and Marks for changes
Pair the Gold Branch with War Plans
Open Character interface, select War Plans, and enter Tactics. In the lower reward section, assign all three available points to Gold for the first comparison run. The Gold node should show the assigned points before the plan is confirmed; check the visible point count instead of assuming the last click registered.
Use the upper activity section for content the character clears reliably. Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons can receive activity points, and at least one point in either line opens Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons as a follow-on choice. A fast pack-clearing build should not be pushed into a boss-heavy route that creates long pauses, deaths, or extra recovery time.
War Plans uses Marks of Wisdom for Tactics and individual Activity tree changes. Completed plans provide the Marks, and the announced PTR holding cap is 20. Read the refund tooltip before confirming a change, because the test-realm cap does not confirm the launch cap and the cost of every reset should not be assumed.
Refund Costs Decide the Better Long-Term Choice
Tyrael's Boons does not use Marks for refunds. Removing one Boons point costs 5,000,000 gold under the written PTR rules. Five points therefore require 25,000,000 gold to recover, and ten points require 50,000,000 gold before the new allocation produces any net gain.
Do not switch between the gold and materials branches after every short run. Keep Scent of Gold fixed while comparing War Plans activity lines, so the activity route remains the variable. A development screenshot showed a different unfinished refund value, so the confirmation dialog in the test client is the authority before spending points.
Measure the Route Without Inflating the Result
Set a specific target first, such as a vendor purchase, a temper, a masterwork attempt, or a known fee. Record starting gold and remaining Marks, then open Character interface, War Plans, and Tactics to confirm the three Gold reward points and selected activity line.
Start the clock before travel, combat, or inventory work.
Complete one full route without changing Boons or Tactics.
Record the wallet before the final War Plans reward and again after collecting it.
Calculate net gold per hour by subtracting starting gold from ending gold, multiplying by 60, and dividing by elapsed minutes.
Include travel, recovery, inventory sorting, selling, cache opening, and plan turn-in time. Keep sell and salvage rules identical between runs. Separate monster drops from the final plan payout so the result shows which part of the route produced the money.
Mrak can grant gold, War Plans boosts, and a Boons max-out option for allocation tests. Treat those grants as test aids, not normal earning speed, and set the recorded starting balance after any grant. Greater Helltides and Escalation Dungeons deserve a regular slot only after their full-run wallet gain beats the normal route under the same timing rules.
For the next session, lock in Scent of Gold's monster-gold-and-gems branch, assign three Gold reward points in Character interface, then run one complete activity line before changing anything; after the target purchase is funded, compare the materials branch only after checking the refund dialog and reviewing cheap Diablo 4 materials as a separate project cost.
