তেঁতুল বা তিন্তিড়ী এর বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম: Tamarindus indica, ইংরেজি নাম: Melanesian papeda এটি Fabaceae পরিবারের Tamarindus গণের অন্তর্ভুক্ত টক জাতীয় ফলের গাছ। এটি একপ্রকার টক ফল বিশেষ।

বিবরণ ও উৎপত্তি
তেঁতুল বৃহৎ ও সুদৃশ্য চিরসবুজ বৃক্ষ। এগাছ প্রায় ২৪ মিটার পর্যন্ত লম্বা হয়। এদের শীর্ষ ছাউনি অনেক এলাকাজুড়ে বিস্তৃত। তেঁতুল সম্ভবত গ্রীষ্মমণ্ডলীয় আফ্রিকার আদিবাসী, তবে ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে এত দিন ধরেই এর চাষ করা হচ্ছে যে এটি কখনও কখনও সেখানে আদিবাসী গাছ বলে জানা গেছে।[৫] এটি আফ্রিকার স্থানীয় অঞ্চলে সুদান, ক্যামেরুন, নাইজেরিয়া, জাম্বিয়া এবং তানজানিয়ায় বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে বনে জন্মায়। আরবে এটি ওমান, বিশেষত ধোফার, যেখানে এটি পাহাড়ের সমুদ্রমুখী ঢালুতে বেড়ে ওঠে বর্ধমান বনে পাওয়া যায়। এটি সম্ভবত হাজার হাজার বছর পূর্বে মানব পরিবহন এবং চাষাবাদের মাধ্যমে দক্ষিণ এশিয়ায় পৌঁছেছিল।[৬][৭]

উপাদান
পাকা তেঁতুল টক-মিষ্টি হয়ে থাকে। এতে রয়েছে উচ্চমাত্রার অ্যাসিড, চিনি, ভিটামিন বি, এবং ফলে সাধারণত না দেখা গেলেও এতে আছে ক্যালসিয়াম।

ওষধি ব্যবহার
উচ্চ রক্তচাপ বা হাই প্রেসার তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে উপশম হয় কাঁচা অথবা পাঁকা তেঁতুল খেলে।

তেঁতুলে টারটারিক এসিড থাকায় খাবার হজমে সহায়তা করে।[৮][৯] পেটের বায়ু, হাত-পা জ্বালায় তেঁতুলের শরবত খুব উপকারী। রক্তে কোলস্টেরল কমানোর কাজে আধুনিককালে তেঁতুল ব্যবহার হচ্ছে। জরে ভোগা রোগীর জর কমানোর জন্য এ ফল ব্যবহৃত হয়।[১০] এছাড়াও স্কেলিটাল ফ্রুরোসিস(skeletal fluorosis) রোগের প্রকোপ হ্রাস করতেও এটি ব্যবহৃত হয়। পাকা তেঁতুল ভিজিয়ে রেখে সকালে শুধু পানি খেলে হাত-পায়ের জ্বালা কমে।[১১]
