পুণায় বন্যার সময় যে কাঠবেড়ালিটা আমার বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নিয়েছিল সেটা ধাড়ি কাঠবেড়ালি নয়, বাচ্চা। শেষ পর্যন্ত সে আমার বাড়িতেই রয়ে গেল।
তার নাম রেখেছি চিড়িকদাস। গৃহিণী তার প্রতি বিশেষ অনুরক্ত হয়ে পড়েছেন; নাতি তাকে পকেটে নিয়ে বেড়ায়; আমার কুকুর কালীচরণ তার প্রতি খুব প্রসন্ন না হলেও তাকে অবজ্ঞাভরে সহ্য করে। চিড়িকদাস সারাদিন চিড়িক চিড়িক শব্দ করে বাড়িময় ঘুরে বেড়ায়, ক্ষিদে পেলে গৃহিণীর কোলে উঠে বসে।

হাটে একটা প্রকাণ্ড বোয়াল মাছ উঠেছে। এক ফকীর ভাবল, এই বোয়াল মাছটার পেটি দিয়ে যদি চারটি ভাত খেতে পারতাম! সে মাছের দোকানের কাছে দাঁড়িয়ে রইল। একজন চাষী এসে মাছটি কিনে নিল। মুসাফির তার পিছে পিছে যেতে লাগল। লোকটি যখন বাড়ির ধারে এসেছে তখন মুসাফির তার নিকটে গিয়ে বলল, “সাহেব! আমি মুসাফির লোক। ভিক্ষা করে খাই। কোনোদিন ভালো খাওয়া হয় না। আজ হাটে গিয়ে যখন ঐ বড় মাছটি দেখলাম, মনে বড় ইচ্ছা হল এই মাছটির পেটি দিয়ে যদি চারটি ভাত খেতে পারতাম! তাই আপনার পিছন পিছন এসেছি। দয়া করে যদি আমার মনের ইচ্ছাটা পূরণ করেন বড়ই খুশি হব।”
